Can Game Theory help Indian eCommerce companies escape the ...

We?ve seen enough and it?s time to settle some scores. Yes, eCommerce is lucrative (not was), it?s not going to die down and we need more players who can satisfy the demand. People will come online but let?s not acquire them for the moment, only to lose them in the longer run. We?ll be dissecting one of the key problem plaguing the eCommerce industry currently- Price Wars. And what better then game theory to help us along the way. What is game theory?

As Wikipedia says, Game Theory is a study of strategic decision making. Playing literally by it, Price Wars is the only natural solution and going by hard coded logic- the one with the deepest pockets will win. But we?ll look at some rosier aspects that can be used to turn the game in your favour.

Competition

This beast called ?competition? never ceases to surprise; it is something so innate to a business that there?s obviously no running away from it. Talking about eCommerce, this area is seeing some fierce competition in India. There are approximately 140 million internet users in India and 25 million of them have made online transactions off which around 10 million are regular online buyers (BBC reported) and this goes on to show the potential the space possesses.

And trying to grab this pie, are the several thousand hundred players. There are more than 650 eCommerce companies that we know of and we?re sure there are more. They all want to change the buying habits of customers and bring them online (but there is a lot of inertia because of some reasons). Now, all this competition isn?t bad. Let?s hear out the legendary Seth Godin on the topic, ?Competition validates you. It creates a category. It permits the sale to be this or that, not yes or no. And this or that is a much easier sale to make.? Also, ?There are seven billion people in the world. Even if your market is hand-made spoke shaves for left-handed woodworkers, there are more people in your market than you can ever hope to track down.? Now, that settles competition but how do you differentiate yourself.

Game Theory

The Indian eCommerce industry is heading the Chinese way where companies are embroiled into fierce deadly price wars. No one is going to make money by just trumping each others discounts. As Mahesh Murthy, Managing Partner at Seedfund succinctly put it in a tweet recently:

mahesh murthy twitter

In game theory terms, it is a complete lose-lose game and anyone now entering the space would be foolhardy. The ones with deep (deep) pockets will have a chance to survive.

Having made that clear, if you?re an eCommerce company with not very deep pockets, what should you do? Change the game! How? We?ll come to that but before we do, let?s draw the value net for an eCommerce company.

valuenet

Along the vertical dimension are the company?s customers and suppliers. Resources such as labor and raw materials flow from the suppliers to the company, and products and services flow from the company to its customers. Money flows in the reverse direction, from customers to the company and from the company to its suppliers. Along the horizontal dimension are the players with whom the company interacts but does not transact.

And we need to understand what changing the game means. We?ll take the most famous example of GM- The time was early 1990?s and the car manufacturers were in a similar price war, an example of destructive competition (detailed HBR paper). In September 1992, General Motors and Household Bank issued a new credit card that allowed cardholders to apply 5% of their charges toward buying or leasing a new GM car, up to $500 per year, with a maximum of $3,500. The GM card has been the most successful credit-card launch in history. One month after it was introduced, there were 1.2 million accounts. Two years later, there were 8.7 million accounts?and the program is still growing. They changed the game. (another example in this post by Talvinder Singh)

We focus a lot of competition which is important but complements are equally important and they?ll help you change the game. Taking a very direct example, complements are people who sell socks if you?re selling shoes and both don?t have intentions of cross expansion.

eCommerce companies need to take advantage of the human vanity. One of the impressive attempts that I came across recently is Bakebox (see how they?re doing it without entering price wars). Alok Kejriwal, in a post illustrated how eCommerce needs brains, not price wars. People are ready to pay, the only thing you need to do is titillate them enough. A person online is vulnerable and is only a swipe away from making the purchase. Something as simple as letting the customer embroider text or a picture on a shirt or customizing a product to her liking will do you a lot of good rather than giving a 50% discount on that shirt.? Discounts are a very temporary measure- Change the game, or atleast tweak it. Another interesting examples are TeaXpress and KashmirBox. (disclaimer: all opinions regarding companies belong to the author)

But once you?ve done that, your competitor follows the same marketing ploy. What do you do? Well, it?s not a zero sum game. And copying is the best form of flattery. Your competitor copying you is a good thing because it expands the market and shifts the focus from price wars. It?s a win-win and you?re ahead in the curve. Competition need not necessarily be destructive. And to stay ahead, you need to find your niche, and we don?t mean a segment, we mean an area. If you?re known for supreme customer support, that will give you loyal customers, if you?re known for quick delivery, that?ll get you another set. But make sure you doing atleast one thing really well about which your customers can talk. It finally boils down to being innovative and keep re-inventing yourself, but that is how the game is. If you?re not ready for it, don?t burn your fingers.

Join us for eSparks 2013 on February 16th in Bangalore to learn all that is happening in the Indian eCommerce space.

Watch Budweiser's Clydesdale Super Bowl Ad ... - Business Insider

You might get a little teary when watching Budweiser's early-released Super Bowl ad starring the classic Clydesdale horses.

Called "Brotherhood," the ad explores the relationship between a trainer and his Clydesdale foal.

And according to Clydesdale operations GM Jeff Knapper, "this newest member of the Budweiser Clydesdale family was 7 days old on the day this part of the Super Bowl commercial was filmed. A star was truly born on Jan. 16."?Budweiser's first-ever tweet actually asks followers to crowdsource the foal's name.

The Anomaly-created spot was directed by Ridley Scott's son, Jake. And if you recognize the trainer, that's because he played Neil Armstrong in "Transformers."

Even though the Clydesdales have appeared in 23 Super Bowls since 1986, this is the first time a big game spot has been released before the game. Watch below and let us know what you think:

Japan's Retail Sales Remain Tepid In December As Economy Struggles To Emerge From Recession

December sales were lower than the 1.3 percent gain witnessed in November. However, it was higher than analysts' expectation of 0.3 percent in December.?

The data released Wednesday by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry showed that Japan?s retail sales, which measure the change in the total value of inflation-adjusted sales at the retail level, rose 0.1 percent from November, when it fell 0.1 percent.

Sales of large retailers were flat in comparison to December 2011, after gaining 0.9 percent the previous month. However, the sales grew 0.7 percent, if stores not surveyed last year were taken into consideration.

Japan?s gross domestic product contracted 3.5 percent in the third quarter of last year in comparison to the previous quarter owing to weak global demand and the low domestic consumption indicating a deepening of recession in the world's third-largest economy.?Besides, exports were seen falling for the seventh consecutive month in December.

However, economists are optimistic of a rebound in the economy in the second quarter, as the U.S. and China markets show signs of recovery.

?Japan?s economy will probably head back to a gradual recovery from this quarter as external demand rebounds, while the government?s stimulus may lend support from the second quarter,? Azusa Kato, an economist at BNP Paribas SA in Tokyo, told Bloomberg before the report was released.

In November, it was reported that Japan?s manufacturing activity contracted to a seasonally adjusted 1.7 percent - much worse than the analysts? expectation of a 0.5 percent decrease.

The continued shrinking of the manufacturing activity is seen increasing the likelihood of a sharp contraction in the economy.

Earlier this month, the government announced a 10.3 trillion yen ($113 billion) fiscal stimulus to revive the economy weakened by a soft global demand and sluggish domestic spending.

Conference to mull doubling India's food production in 5 years

MUMBAI (Commodity Online): In a bid to address critical issues of food security, agricultural sustainability and policies for food crisis alleviation, Crop Care Federation of India (CCFI) is hosting the conference on ?Doubling food production in five years?; an ambitious theme.

The underlying premise of this three day conclusive convention focuses on reviewing current state of Indian agriculture, innovations, sustainable food policies and the effectual balance required for protection of ecology and environment while ensuring profitable agriculture for the farmer and a hunger free India and world.

The conference is scheduled from February 1st to February 3rd 2013 at the Vigyan Bhawan, New Delhi.

Commenting on importance of food security, R.D. Shroff, Chairman, CCFI, said, ?With the world population expected to reach nearly 9 billion by 2050, food security at a global and national level needs to be a key priority.?

?Not only is the numbers required to be fed increasing, climate change is also leading to a reduction in available arable land and water resources. This double impact needs proactive and urgent measures in collaborative brainstorming, policy and action across national and state governments, producers, technologists, environmentalists and the consumers. The goal of this conference is to source the best platforms for encompassing suitable resolutions for food crisis, self dependency and public policy.? he added.

The conference will be inaugurated by the President of India, Pranab Mukherjee. Union Minister for Agriculture, Sharad Pawar and Minister of State for Chemicals and Fertilizers Shrikant Kumar Jena will grace the occasion among other industry stalwarts, scientists and policy makers.

Deputy Chairman, Planning Commission, Montek Singh Ahluwalia will deliver the key note address at a banquet in the evening. The proceedings of the first day will include a panel discussion on the role of key stakeholders in increasing food production, innovation in agriculture and extension work.

The second day?s sessions include panel discussions on cooperation between government and regulatory authorities, role of seeds and GM crops in doubling food production, government policies & post harvest management, Agrochemicals and international experiences in agricultural productivity improvement.

Some key panelists for the day comprise of Dr RB Singh, Dr Patrick Moore, Dr Ayyappan (DG ICAR), Dr. Mauricio Antonio Lopes (President, EMBRAPA, Brazil) and renowned economist and professor, Dr. Bibek Debroy (Center for Policy Research), to name a few.

The final day?s events include the valedictory function which will be led by Smt. Sushma Swaraj, MP.

In fact the experience of the last two Five Year Plans reveals that for the Indian economy to grow at 9 per cent, it is important that agriculture should grow at least by 4 per cent per annum, all of which will not be volume growth. This will take more than 17 years to double the production. In order to double food production in the next 8 years we must grow at an annualised compounded rate of 9 per cent, the release noted.?

Worldwide, carriers from Asia-pacific and Middle-East were the largest contributors in the growth saga, near about half of the total air freight volumes were carried by airlines bound from Asia-pacific region. Albeit European airlines recorded less well traffic but managed to give flat traffic rate in the month of November, 2012.

This way, they can save off lots of money as well as curtail the necessity of carrying huge loads on the back.
For everyone, who are going to shift to foreign land or planning a trip to the exotic locations abroad or into export and import business, its a wise idea to ship their consignments through cargo planes. Arizona's Medicaid system is effective

The Republic?s own ?fact-checkers? would have a hard time finding the facts in Tom Jenney?s Medicaid column. There is so much at stake with the governor?s decision to expand Medicaid and countless details still to be worked out; providing a venue for this sort of misinformation is destructive.

Jenney clearly never read the bill he trashed so relentlessly. House Bill 2045 is not a bed-tax bill. HB 2045 is a payment reform bill that was thoroughly vetted last year by the legislature.?

This year?s version completes the switch to a new way to pay for hospital services.? Simplistically, today hospitals are paid a daily rate for each day a patient is in the hospital. The longer the patient stays, the more money the hospital makes.?

Using this new diagnosis-based payment system, as envisioned in the legislation Representative Carter has worked so hard to advance, the financial incentive is to get the patient out of the hospital, not keep a patient there.? ?

Maybe people who want to perpetuate the current unsustainable system are not interested in measures like these that will pay for quality of care instead of quantity. Or maybe it's that they're just not knowledgeable enough to understand the issues. But this reform is a critical step toward more integrated, patient-centered health care in Arizona.

Jenney doesn?t know the first thing about Arizona?s Medicaid system.? The suggestion that our state?s Medicaid patients are shuttered off to a ?low-quality, government-managed health insurance system with limited medical options? is preposterous.?

States across America are now trying to emulate Arizona?s model for patient-centered managed care, provided through an innovative public-private partnership where private health plans -- not the government -- coordinate the health care for their members. AHCCCS patients are treated in our state?s world-class institutions, such as Barrows Neurological Institute and Phoenix Children?s Hospital, through a fully integrated and highly acclaimed health-care delivery system.?

55,000 Arizona health-care providers treat AHCCCS patients, managed by private health plans that employ thousands of Arizonans. Members have their choice of a health plan and a doctor. This is first-tier care, not the second tier Jenney described.?AHCCCS:

-- Is continually ranked as having among the lowest per-member cost among Medicaid programs in the United States while still meeting high quality standards.

-- Serves more than 75 percent of its long-term care members in the home or community?among the highest in the nation.

-- Maintains the lowest pharmaceutical costs in the country and highest utilization of generic drugs.

-- Is ranked America?s number one Medicaid program for individuals with physical and developmental disabilities.

Jenney sites unattributed ?studies? that reveal generic ?Medicaid? patients have bad health outcomes. In other states, maybe, but not in Arizona. ?A truer and more responsible study of actual Arizona data makes precisely the opposite case.?

The study by the New England Journal of Medicine, citing the work of real health-care experts who scientifically reviewed Arizona-specific cases, shows Arizona?s providers are saving lives and delivering better health outcomes.

The governor?s bold decision to expand Medicaid deserves more -- a thorough and responsible examination of the facts using Arizona-based data and the homegrown expertise we have in abundance.

Deb Gullett is executive director of the Arizona Association of Health Plans.

Italy's comeback kid Berlusconi defends Mussolini

Vincenzo Pinto / AFP - Getty Images

Italy's former Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi, seen giving a speech during a campaign rally in Rome Friday, appears to have shrugged off recent scandals.

By Claudio Lavanga, Producer, NBC News

ROME ? He is the comeback kid of Italian politics, but Silvio Berlusconi's attempt to revive his career is under the spotlight after he defended fascist wartime leader Benito Mussolini at a ceremony for victims of the Nazi Holocaust.?

The former prime minister said Mussolini's decision to echo Nazi Germany's anti-Jewish laws had been his "worst fault" as a leader "who in so many other ways did well."

He said: "It is difficult now to put yourself in the shoes of people who were making decisions at that time. Obviously the government of that time, out of fear that German power might lead to victory, preferred to ally itself with Hitler's Germany rather than opposing it."

The remarks, given?to reporters in Milan on Sunday, prompted outrage from many quarters in Italy and overseas.

?He has lost the plot," said David Patsi, president of the Italian school Dante Alighieri in Jerusalem and whose father was killed in a concentration camp. "He is an idiot. But I am not surprised. Sometime he even reminds me of Mussolini."

He added: "But I don?t think he is the problem. The problem is that a large number of Italians agree with him.??

That helps explain why Berlusconi could still make his comeback, despite a track record would have forced almost any other politician to retire from public life.

In November 2011, he was forced to resign as prime minister after it became clear that his denial of the economic crisis was bringing Italy to the brink of disaster.

In October last year, he was sentenced to four years in prison for an epic offshore tax fraud, put off pending appeals to higher courts.

And, if that weren't enough, he is still on trial for allegedly paying an underage exotic dancer for sex.

His popularity hit an all-time low and the 76-year-old with a net worth of almost $6 billion --?according to Forbes magazine -- might have been expected to retire to one of his many mansions.

But he was simply waiting for the chance to strike back in the flamboyant style that won him three terms as prime minister.

Following the resignation of Mario Monti -- the technocratic prime minister who replaced him in 2011 promising to reinvigorate Italy's languishing economy -- Berlusconi has done what he does best: He carpet-bombed the Italian media with guest appearances, clocking up an impressive 63 hours of airtime in only 21 days.

In essence, it's as if during the recent U.S. presidential election, former president George W. Bush was given more airtime than Barack Obama and Mitt Romney combined.

Crisis 'wasn't my fault'
Seems inconceivable, but then Italy has always been an exception in the Western world, and flamboyant and media-friendly Berlusconi, even as an outsider, draws a bigger audience than his closest competitors combined.

Officially, Berlusconi is not actually running as a candidate prime minister -- because this was the price it took to persuade the Northern League party to join?Berlusconi's People of Freedom party in a coalition.

But a good result in the elections could mean that all bets are off.

Karima el Marough, better known as "Ruby the Heart Stealer," was called to testify over allegations that former Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi paid to have sex with her when she was still a minor. NBC's Claudio Lavanga reports.

?Italy?s economic crisis wasn?t my fault. It was the consequence of the wider international crisis,? a defiant Berlusconi recently told a TV host, before he refused to apologize for previously denying the extent of the crisis.

It would seem to be an uphill task for Berlusconi to win the premiership for a fourth time -- in polls his coalition is trailing the center-left Democratic Party by at least 12 points.

But, after his TV onslaught, Berlusconi's bloc saw its poll rating rise by 3 percentage points.

Berlusconi 'very clever'

Italians are tired of painfully high unemployment rates, rising taxes, tax-evasion clampdowns and plummeting spending power.

But it remains to be seen whether they really believe Berlusconi when he claims that the economic crisis wasn't his fault and that his tax-cutting strategy is the solution.

?Berlusconi has been very clever. He stepped aside when the new government introduced very unpopular austerity measures and has come back in the limelight only now, saying that the cure was worse than the illness,? Maurizio Caprara, a journalist for the daily Corriere della Sera, said.

?Now he is trying to rally again his troops. Many became disillusioned following his many scandals, but many, as the polls show, may decide to give him one more try,? he added.

Monti recently called Berlusconi the "Pied Piper of Hamelin," who ?leads the mice to drown in the river, having fooled Italians three times already.?

And yet, at least according to his recently rising popularity, many Italians seem to find his tune irresistible.??

PASAY CITY, METRO MANILA ? Betsy Westerndrop?s love affair with the Manila Bay sunset started in the 1950s as a young bride who came to the country accompanying her Filipino-Spanish husband Antonio Brias to his homeland.

The skyscape reflected in the clear water has always been a fascination for the Spanish painter, with the symphony of changing colors and moving clouds remains vivid in her memory like the first time she saw them.

Betsy?s husband, who was then working for San Miguel Corporation, would fetch her from their Ermita apartment and drive by Dewey Boulevard (now Roxas Boulevard) to witness the sunset.

?Filipinos are very lucky to have the Manila sunset, it is very beautiful. This is a very special part of the Philippines that I love and feel very deep connection for,? she says.

Years later after her husband died, she continued to stay in their home ? a large part of which doubles as her studio ? that overlooks Manila?s iconic sunrise and sunset.

Returning to Madrid, she often told friend she will never exchange those years of basking in the beauty of Manila Bay sunset. It was her favorite subject despite friends requesting that she paint Spanish sunsets for a change.

Prior to visiting the Philippines, Betsy was already a well-known figure among Spain?s aristocrats for her detailed portraits and lush floral bouquets. The transition of her work to more personal subjects such as personal portraits and now, the abstract skyscapes or atmosferografias, depicts the evolution and personal journey of the artist.

What separates her work from other ?nature painters ? is that her skyscapes ?evolved into more abstract passages of light, color and movement, a mirror of her own personal and worldly musings,? says Singapore-based art dealer Valentine Willie.

?I paint not the water, not the sea. I paint the sky. There is no movement in the water. It is like a mirror,? explains Betsy, who, at the age of 95, still paints at her home studio every day.

Her paintings average from four to seven high, which allows for more space to see the patterns of color and movements in her painting ? quite different from usual sunset paintings that depict the sky and the sun as just part of the bigger picture.

During an interview at her Makati studio, Betsy showed some of her unfinished work still tied to a scaffolding.

?I paint every day. Some paintings I finish in just hours, others I finish in months. The colors I use and the brushstrokes also depend on my mood and how I remembered the sunset,? she says while pointing toward the calm aquamarine skyscape painting framed alongside a bold skyscape with lots of red and violet and harsh brushstrokes.

One can also see the numerous brushes dipped in water to clean off the acrylic paint that Betsy must have used the prior day. The artist has long discarded oils and prefers water-based acrylic, which has a consistency of oil minus the long drying time and fumes.

Art critic Cid Reyes compares Betsy?s skyscape series to the works JMW Turner, the 18th century British Romantic painter known for his storm-tossed seascapes, lashing rains and winds.

Eva McGovern, curator of Manila Contemporary, says Betsy?s classic approach makes her work more accessible to art collectors. The sheer size of the skyscape paintings are actually some of the biggest that Manila Contemporary has exhibited so far.

?Landscapes are a very popular subject but Betsy?s approach is unique. The atmosferografias are like windows to Betsy?s emotions?they evoke feelings of serenity, joy and anger,? Eva says.

The exhibit also features never-before seen paintings from Betsy?s personal collection, including portraits of her and her family in intimate moments placed alongside a domestic interior setting for backdrop so museum-goers can fully appreciate their beauty.

The paintings are on view until February 10 at Manila Contemporary?s showroom in Whitespace along Pasong Tamo Extension. Betsy says she will be present for the duration of the exhibit to welcome questions from anyone interested in her work.

'Duh': McCain thinks your questions are dumb, reporters

Arizona Sen. John McCain (Mark Wilson/Getty Images)

John McCain heard your question, and he thinks it's really dumb.

While the Arizona Republican senator fielded questions on Capitol Hill Tuesday, a day after he joined a bipartisan group of senators to announce a blueprint for comprehensive immigration reform, one reporter asked how he would respond if the proposed provision that requires increased border enforcement were challenged.

He would oppose it, he said. "Duh."

As part of the outline of principles for an immigration overhaul unveiled Monday by McCain and seven other senators, any new overhaul would require enhanced border security before illegal immigrants already in the country could begin to seek a path to citizenship. Republicans have insisted that it be a key component of any large immigration bill.

Listen to the exchange between McCain and the reporter here:

Reporter: "How do you feel about not tying border security to citizenship?"

McCain: "What do you mean 'not tying it'

Reporter: "Basically your plan..."

McCain: "Didn't you see the press conference? Did you happen to miss it? What do you mean, 'not tying?'"

Reporter: "But if somebody were to come out with a statement saying..."

McCain: "If somebody were to come out that's in contradiction to what we said, we'd say we disagree with it. Duh."

Immigration reform: 'This will be the year,' bipartisan Senate 'gang' says

The politics of immigration reform have 'turned upside down' to make the Senate plan possible. It proposes a long path to citizenship, but only after the US border is deemed to be secure.

By David Grant,?Staff writer / January 28, 2013

(L.-r.) Senators John McCain (R) of Arizona, Robert Menendez (D) of New Jersey, Charles Schumer (D) of New York, Richard Durbin (D) of Illinois, and Marco Rubio (R) of Florida, attend a news conference on comprehensive immigration reform at the US Capitol in Washington on Monday.

A bipartisan ?gang? of eight senators fired the opening salvo on immigration reform Monday, proposing a plan that offers immediate legal status for many of the more than 10 million undocumented US immigrants but delays their embarking on a path to citizenship until a raft of border security and immigration enforcement mechanisms are in place.

President Obama, who made sweeping immigration reform a key promise in his reelection campaign and won more than 70 percent?of the Latino vote in November, is delivering a speech in Las Vegas Tuesday to announce the White House initiative on the issue. House Republicans, too, are expected to take up their own proposals.

All the activity indicates that broad-based immigration reform, which for years languished in the realm of political impossibility, may now be within Washington?s reach.

?Other bipartisan groups of senators have stood in the same spot before trumpeting similar proposals. But we believe this will be the year Congress finally gets it done,? said Sen. Charles Schumer (D) of New York.

?The politics of this issue have been turned upside down,? he said. ?For the first time ever, there?s more political risk in opposing immigration reform than in supporting it.?

Majority Leader Harry Reid (D) of Nevada pledged on the Senate floor Monday to do ?everything in my power as majority leader to get a bill across the finish line.? Senator Schumer said the group hoped to have the legislation written by March, with the bill hitting the Senate floor sometime in the late spring or early summer.

Schumer said Mr. Obama, during a call with Schumer and Sen. Dick Durbin (D) of Illinois on Sunday, was ?delighted? with the bipartisan framework.

The bipartisan working group of senators features immigration reform veterans like Democrats Schumer and Durbin and Bob Menendez of New Jersey, and Republicans John McCain of Arizona and Lindsey Graham of South Carolina alongside relative newcomers: Marco Rubio (R) of Florida, Michael Bennet (D) of Colorado and Jeff Flake (R) of Arizona.

Qi Gong Could Improve Breast Cancer Patients' Quality Of Life

An ancient Chinese practice could make life better for women undergoing treatment for breast cancer, according to a small new study.

Researchers from the MD Anderson Cancer Center at the University of Texas found that practicing qi gong was linked with decreased depression and increased quality of life in women who were undergoing radiotherapy for their breast cancer.

The findings are important because past research has shown an association between depression and worse outcomes for cancer patients.

The new study, published in the journal Cancer, included 96 Chinese women who had stage 1, 2 or 3 breast cancer and were going to the Fudan University Shanghai Cancer Center in China. About half of the women were assigned to do five qi gong classes, each 40 minutes long, while they were undergoing radiation therapy for five to six weeks. The other half of the women were part of the control group and just underwent standard care during the radiation therapy.

Researchers had the study participants complete assessments on their depressive symptoms, fatigue, sleep and quality of life at the start of the study, during the study, at the end of the study, and one and three months after the study had ended.

Researchers found that women who did qi gong experienced a decrease in depressive symptoms by the end of the study, while women who were in the control group didn't experience any decrease in symptoms. They also noted that the women who had the highest scores on the depression scale were the ones who experienced the greatest benefit -- both in decreased depressive symptoms and improved quality of life -- from qi gong.

However, there were some limitations to the study -- including the fact that only Chinese women who were recruited from one place were used in the study (meaning the findings may not be able to be applied to other groups of people), and that something other than the qi gong itself -- perhaps the fact that it is exercise -- is responsible for the effect.

Qi gong could have beneficial effects beyond cancer patients, too -- a large review of studies that appeared in 2010 in the American Journal of Health Promotion showed that the Chinese practice could improve heart health, bone health and balance.

Being bored at work can make us more creative

Jan. 9, 2013 ? Most of us think of being bored at work as a negative experience, but a new study suggests it can have positive results including an increase in creativity because it gives us time to daydream.

That is the finding of a study being presented January 9, 2013, by Dr Sandi Mann and Rebekah Cadman from the University of Central Lancashire at the Annual Conference of the British Psychological Society Division of Occupational Psychology. The Conference is being held at the Crowne Plaza Hotel, Chester.

Dr Mann and Ms Cadman conducted two studies. In the first 40 people were asked to carry out a boring task (copying numbers out of a telephone directory) for 15 minutes, and were then asked to complete another task (coming up with different uses for a pair of polystyrene cups) that gave them a chance to display their creativity.

It turned out that the 40 people who had first copied out the telephone numbers were more creative than a control group of 40 who had just been asked to come up with uses for the cups.

To see if daydreaming was a factor in this effect, a second boring task was introduced that allowed even more daydreaming than the boring writing task.. This second study saw 30 people copying out the numbers as before, but also included a second group of 30 reading rather than writing them.

Again the researchers found that the people in the control group were least creative, but the people who had just read the names were more creative than those who had to write them out. This suggests that more passive boring activities, like reading or perhaps attending meetings, can lead to more creativity -- whereas writing, by reducing the scope for daydreaming, reduces the creativity-enhancing effects of boredom.

Dr Mann says: "Boredom at work has always been seen as something to be eliminated, but perhaps we should be embracing it in order to enhance our creativity. What we want to do next is to see what the practical implications of this finding are. Do people who are bored at work become more creative in other areas of their work -- or do they go home and write novels?"
